Welcome to Prescott, AZ

   Location

Prescott is located in central Arizona amid the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in the world, at an elevation of 6,347 feet. The community is 96 miles northwest of Phoenix and 90 miles south-west of Flagstaff. Prescott was established in 1864 after President Lincoln sent a detachment of Union Troops to secure the gold and silver found in the area. It was incorporated in 1881, and is the Yavapai County seat. The city is named in honor of William Hicking Prescott, a noted historian. The folks around these parts call it "Preskit".

    Climate

Prescott is Arizona's mile-high city, and its high elevation and mountain breezes keep temperatures from reaching the grueling levels of low-lying Phoenix. In summer the day time temperature rarely exceeds 86 degrees, and in winter's sun-filled days it averages about 50 degrees. Humidity stays a moderate 46% year-round. Average snowfall is 21 inches per year and usually melts after a few hours of sunshine; rainfall averages 19 inches per year.

    Histrory

The discovery of gold in 1838 brought national attention to Prescott, and further discoveries in 1861 drew the attention of President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was looking for possible sources of funding for the North during the Civil War and created the Arizona Territory in 1864. John Goodwin, as first territorial governor, established Prescott as the first territorial capital. The new governor began the work of laying out the current downtown streets.

Prescott developed rapidly and in 1865 was described as being built exclusively of wood and inhabited almost entirely by Americans. Both of these facts made it unique among early communities in Arizona. Prescott lost its title as the Capital of Arizona to Tucson and finally to Phoenix in 1889. In 1900, a devastating fire burned Prescott to the ground, but it was rebuilt, and many of the buildings you see today are reminders of its past. Today, the older residential streets are lined with fall trees and pitched-roof frame houses, including turreted Victorians. Prescott has many homes and businesses on the National Register of Historic Places and its white granite courthouse, set among green lawns and spreading trees, reflects the Midwestern and New England background of Prescott's pioneers.
